Costco Auto Program Car Buying Service: How It Works (and the Catch)

Costco sells a lot of things. Tires. Mattresses. Even caskets. So it makes sense that they’d have a car buying program too.

Millions of members use the Costco Auto Program every year. It’s been around since 1997. And it’s not a scam. It’s a real member benefit that does real things.

But most people don’t actually know what it does. And more importantly, what it doesn’t do.

Before you show up at a dealership expecting “Costco pricing” to change everything, here’s what you’re actually getting into.

What Is the Costco Auto Program?

The Costco Auto Program is a member benefit that connects Costco members with a network of pre-screened dealerships. Those dealerships have agreed to offer members a pre-negotiated price on new vehicles.

Costco doesn’t sell you the car. They don’t send a negotiator to the dealership with you. They don’t sit across the desk on your behalf.

What they do: build a dealer network, set pricing agreements, and run a referral system. You contact the program, they connect you with a participating dealer in your area, and a dedicated Costco contact at that dealer walks you through the purchase at the “member price.”

That’s the product.

How It Works Step by Step

  1. Visit the Costco Auto Program website and enter the vehicle you want.
  2. The program matches you with a participating dealer nearby.
  3. A dedicated program contact at that dealership reaches out, usually within a business day.
  4. You schedule an appointment and go in to see the car.
  5. The price is already set at the Costco member price. No back-and-forth on the sticker.
  6. You complete the paperwork at the dealership, including the F&I office.

On paper, it’s simple. You skip one part of the process: the price negotiation on the vehicle itself.

What You Actually Get

Pre-negotiated vehicle pricing. The program price sits below MSRP. How far below depends on the brand, the model, and what’s in inventory. In most cases you’re looking at a fair price, not necessarily the lowest possible price. What “fair” means in practice: comparable to what a prepared buyer who’s done their research can usually pull off on their own.

A dedicated contact. You don’t wander the lot cold. A trained program specialist handles your visit. They know the price, they know the process, and they’re supposed to make it efficient. That’s a real improvement over starting from zero with a random floor salesperson.

No haggling on the vehicle price. The price is the price. For buyers who hate negotiating, that alone is worth something.

A broad dealer network. The program covers most major brands and thousands of dealers nationwide. For common vehicles in most metro areas, you’ll find inventory quickly.

The Catch

Here it is: the Costco program removes the price negotiation on the car. That’s it. Everything else stays the same.

You still go to the dealership. You still sit in the chair. You still go through the F&I office.

The F&I manager is going to offer you extended warranties, gap insurance, paint protection, and credit insurance. The Costco member price covers the vehicle. The F&I conversation is still entirely yours to navigate. Dealers make significant margin in F&I, and that doesn’t change just because the sticker price was preset.

Most buyers leave more money on the table in F&I than on the vehicle price. The Costco program doesn’t help with that.

A few more things worth knowing:

The pricing isn’t always exceptional. Fair is the right word. The Costco member price is typically a solid number. It’s not always the lowest number available. Buyers who’ve done serious research, or who hired someone to do it for them, have walked away with better terms. “Below MSRP” isn’t the same as “best deal.”

Your selection is limited to participating dealers. If the specific trim, color, and package you want is sitting at a non-participating dealer, the program can’t help you get it. You’re limited to whatever’s available in the network near you.

The program contact still works for the dealer. They’re trained, pleasant, and committed to the Costco process. But the dealer pays them. Their job is to sell you a car, not to represent your interests when the deal gets complicated. The Costco contact is a better version of a floor salesperson. That’s a meaningful improvement. It’s not the same as having someone on your side of the table.

You’re still doing most of the work. Research. Scheduling. The drive. The test drive. The appointment. The hours sitting there. The paperwork. The Costco program handles the vehicle price conversation. The rest is still on you.

When Costco’s Program Makes Sense

The Costco Auto Program is a genuinely useful tool in the right situation.

If you’re buying a common vehicle, something sitting on lots across your metro area, the program works well. You get a fair price without a fight and a structured buying experience.

If you’re comfortable in a dealership. If F&I doesn’t rattle you. If you have time on a weekend to spend at the dealer. The program makes that experience smoother and faster than starting cold.

For buyers who mainly want to skip the sticker-price negotiation and don’t mind the rest of the process, this is a solid free benefit that comes with a Costco membership you already have.

It’s a discount access card. That’s a valuable thing.

When You Need More Than a Discount

There are buyers for whom the Costco program is enough. And there are buyers for whom it isn’t.

Here’s when it falls short.

When you need someone to find the car. The Costco program sends you to a participating dealer. It doesn’t search inventory across the broader market. It doesn’t know you want a specific trim with a specific option package that’s sitting at a dealer in the next state. You get what’s available at whoever’s local and in the network.

When you want someone on your side during F&I. The program covers the vehicle price and nothing else. The F&I room, which is where buyers can lose thousands through unnecessary products or unfavorable financing terms, is still entirely on you.

When you want to skip the dealership experience. The Costco program gives you a fair price at the dealership. It doesn’t get you out of the dealership. If time is the constraint, not the price, the program doesn’t solve your actual problem.

When the car you want isn’t at a Costco dealer. That’s a hard limit with no workaround inside the program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Costco Auto Program work on used cars?

No. The Costco Auto Program applies to new vehicles only. Used car buyers won’t find help through the program. A buyer’s advocate can work the used market the same way.

Is Costco program pricing actually better than what I could negotiate myself?

Sometimes. The member price is typically a fair number, roughly in line with what a prepared buyer can often negotiate independently. If negotiation isn’t something you’re good at or want to do, the Costco price does that work for you. If you’re a skilled negotiator, you might do equally well on your own.

Do I still have to go to the dealership if I use the Costco program?

Yes. The program handles the pricing, not the experience. You still schedule an appointment, go in, test drive, and sit through the paperwork including F&I. It’s a faster, lower-friction visit, but it’s still a visit.

Can I negotiate the Costco price further?

The Costco price is designed to be fixed. The program’s value is that you skip the negotiation. In practice, dealers have varying levels of flexibility, but the expectation is that you’re accepting the preset number.

What about financing?

The Costco program doesn’t arrange financing. You work with the dealership’s F&I department or bring your own financing. Arriving with pre-approved financing from your bank or credit union is worth doing regardless of which buying approach you use. It gives you more leverage in F&I and a real comparison point for any rate the dealer offers.

Can the Costco program help me buy out of state or from a dealer in another city?

The program covers dealers nationwide, but you’re limited to participating dealers. If logistics, transport, or out-of-state title work are part of the deal, that’s on you to coordinate. The program won’t handle it.

How is Just Sign Cars different from the Costco Auto Program?

The Costco program connects you to a participating dealer and provides a pre-set vehicle price. Just Sign Cars finds the specific car you want across our network, negotiates the full deal on your behalf, and hands you a locked deal sheet. You go to the dealership once, to sign and pick up the car. Two different tools, two different outcomes. The Costco program is a pricing pass. Just Sign Cars is a service.
